Delhi Assembly pays tribute to WW1 Indian soldiers, singer Asha Bhosle

The Delhi Assembly on Tuesday paid tribute to legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on April 12, 2026, and the 75,000 Indian soldiers who died in the First World War. Reading out obituary references at the Assemblys special session, Speaker Vijender Gupta said 108 years ago, a War Conference was convened on April 28, 1918, by British Viceroy Lord Chelmsford in the same Assembly Hall.

Reading out obituary references at the Assembly's special session, Speaker Vijender Gupta said 108 years ago, a War Conference was convened on April 28, 1918, by British Viceroy Lord Chelmsford in the same Assembly Hall. He said representatives, including Mahatma Gandhi and members from princely states, had extended support to the British war effort, following which around 13 lakh Indian soldiers participated in World War I, and more than 74,000 laid down their lives fighting in Flanders, Gallipoli, and Mesopotamia. ''It is our duty to remember those 75,000 unnamed Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in a war not their own and remained, for long, forgotten by history. As a free nation, we offer our tribute to their sacrifice,'' Gupta said. The House observed a one-minute silence in memory of the fallen soldiers. The Speaker said a seminar will be held in the Assembly on April 30, where Mizoram Governor General VK Singh will be the chief guest. A publication reproducing the proceedings of the War Conference in its original form will also be released, he added. The Assembly also condoled the demise of Leader of Opposition Atishi Marlena's father Vijay Singh.
