Diplomatic Dialogue: US Seeks Clarity from Maldives Amid Iran War Tension

The US has sought clarification from the Maldivian government following President Mohammad Muizzu's criticism over the US-Israel actions in Iran. US diplomats engaged in talks with Maldivian officials to assure positive relations, amid concerns of the Maldives being used in war efforts against Iran.

The United States has requested clarification from the Maldives after President Mohammad Muizzu censured Washington regarding its stance on the war with Iran. This issue was raised during discussions between US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Sergio Gor, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Bethany Morrison, and Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam.

Muizzu has expressed strong condemnation of the US and Israel's offensive against Iran, consistently asserting that he will oppose any involvement of the Maldives in supporting the war effort. The US-Maldives diplomatic relations, which span 60 years, were highlighted in discussions seeking to assure continued cooperation.

In a statement, the US Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs noted that the Maldivian Foreign Minister clarified remarks made by the president, emphasizing a desire for positive relations moving forward. This diplomatic engagement comes after Muizzu previously declined to meet Gor during his visit to Male.
