As initial results from the West Bengal Assembly elections trickled in around 9 am, an intense showdown emerged between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). Both were reportedly leading in approximately 112 seats, although official figures were yet to be released by the Election Commission.
In Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) showed a slight edge over the AIADMK-led coalition, with leads in about 55 seats compared to the opposition's 25. This phase of the elections has seen its fair share of controversies, with BJP's Arjun Singh from Noapara alleging procedural irregularities at the counting centre.
Arjun Singh claims his access to the centre was obstructed, raising concerns over the integrity of the count. He expressed intent to raise the issue with the election observer, suggesting possible foul play. Meanwhile, heightened security measures were observed across Tamil Nadu's critical counting venues, such as Loyola College, as the state braces for the election outcome.
Simmering tensions were evident with a verbal exchange between TMC and BJP polling agents. The TMC accused the BJP of receiving preferential treatment, alleging access restrictions for TMC while BJP agents were permitted conveniences like files and pens. On the flip side, BJP agents shot back with accusations of TMC agents failing to display ID, undermining order in polling spaces.
Security was paramount as Tamil Nadu geared up for the vote counts with a robust three-layer security system. This involved stringent measures as vehicles and personnel entered pivotal counting centres, including Loyola College, which stores the enormous tally of EVMs from across the votes cast.
