Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh has stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) recent electoral victories in Assam and West Bengal are set to favorably impact the forthcoming elections in Manipur. The chief minister underscored the significance of this for the political landscape of the northeastern state.
Singh highlighted the democratic nature of India's electoral process, expressing his congratulations to the residents of Bengal and Assam for their electoral decisions. He also spotlighted the public demand for implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, a move aimed at identifying illegal immigrants.
During N Biren Singh's tenure as chief minister, the Manipur Legislative Assembly resolved in August 2022 to establish a Population Commission and enforce the NRC. Civil organizations continue to press for its execution, pushing for the formation of a specialized committee to move the resolution forward.
