In a significant political upheaval, the fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged victorious over the long-standing Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in Tamil Nadu. TVK, led by its charismatic leader Vijay, clinched 108 seats, becoming the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Despite falling 10 seats short of a simple majority, Vijay expressed confidence in forming the government. Meanwhile, M K Stalin resigned as Chief Minister, asserting the DMK's role as a formidable opposition. The swearing-in of the new cabinet is expected on May 7, a date tinged with symbolism as it was when Stalin assumed power in 2021.
The political landscape now leans towards coalition governance, with TVK reaching out to other parties for support. The Congress, along with DMK's previous allies, are pivotal in deciding the future political alliance. This shift marks a significant transition in Tamil Nadu's governance, paving the way for new political dynamics.
