Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray issued a strong critique of political excess, questioning why austerity measures are expected solely from the general public while politicians engage in lavish election campaigns.

Thackeray took to Facebook following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for reduced fuel consumption, pointing out the inconsistency between the message and the actions of political leaders who travel with large convoys and conduct grand roadshows. He highlighted the substantial fuel use during such events, and urged leaders to acknowledge their mistakes and apply austerity measures universally, including among the political class.

Additionally, Thackeray raised concerns over persisting high fuel costs despite previous global drops in crude oil prices and demanded government transparency in economic decision-making and planning. He criticized the significant tax burden on fuel and questioned the management of the country's economic situation, urging for answers on the rupee's depreciation and the resignation of several RBI governors.
