Chennithala's political career began in the 1970s through the Kerala Students Union, eventually leading to significant roles like president of the National Students' Union of India and later the Indian Youth Congress. He has long been a steady presence in the party, known for rarely distancing himself from its leadership.

While other leaders who once worked under him have risen to prominent positions, Chennithala has maintained a strong organizational base in central Kerala. Despite being seen as a figure with a clean image and broad acceptability, the top leadership roles have continued to elude him, leaving his supporters disappointed yet hopeful.
