Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, issued a scathing rebuke of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, accusing him of compromising vital trade negotiations. Gandhi's remarks followed a New York Times report suggesting the US Justice Department might drop charges against industrialist Gautam Adani, alleging deep-seated corruption.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission had previously accused Adani and his associates of orchestrating a bribery scheme exceeding USD 250 million to secure solar contracts in India between 2020 and 2024. The NYT report emphasizes that the Justice Department is reconsidering the charges, citing insufficient evidence.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh also criticized PM Modi, asserting that the Indo-US trade agreements were disproportionately beneficial to the US. Allegations include Modi yielding to former President Trump's demands, subsequently halting Operation Sindoor abruptly in 2025. Simultaneously, Adani is reportedly willing to invest USD 10 billion in the US economy if the charges are dropped, according to the NYT.
