German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Friday the European Union must demonstrate its capacity and willingness to admit new members. His remarks came as EU leaders met with Western Balkan counterparts, amid intensified interest in enlargement following Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

The accession process remains lengthy and complex, requiring unanimous approval from all 27 EU members at each stage. Merz, speaking at the summit in Tivat, Montenegro, stressed the need for the EU to embrace this part of Europe for future integration.

Six Western Balkan countries, including Montenegro as the frontrunner, aspire for EU membership but face hurdles, ranging from justice reforms to corruption. Proposals are being discussed to allow aspiring members more access to EU programs as an interim step before full membership.
