Trump Halts Military Action as Peace Deal Looms with Iran
President Trump called off U.S. military strikes on Iran, indicating that final points of an initial peace deal have been approved. The agreement intends to temporarily ease Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz and halt U.S. blockades. Some issues, including Iran's nuclear program, remain unresolved.
President Trump announced a halt to U.S. military strikes on Iran on Thursday, indicating that an initial peace agreement has been reached. Details of a formal signing ceremony will be announced soon. Iran is likely to approve the deal, according to the semi-official Fars news agency, but has not yet issued a formal response.
The accord is expected to temporarily reduce Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz and lift the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, according to sources. However, questions concerning Iran's nuclear program and its stockpile of uranium will be set aside for future negotiations. Analysts suggest that Trump's move may be seen as a political maneuver to differentiate from the 2015 agreement he once criticized.
Despite internal opposition, Trump confirmed the agreement's approval by the highest echelons of Iranian leadership, as well as regional allies like Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The announcement led to a rise in U.S. stocks and a drop in oil prices. This conflict, which began with airstrikes on February 28, has resulted in thousands of casualties, mainly in Iran and Lebanon.
