Political Storms: Imran Khan's Hospital Debacle Spurs Contempt Motion

Imran Khan's party has filed a contempt petition against the government for defying a court order by taking the former prime minister to a state-run hospital instead of the private facility directed by the court. The controversy has intensified public protests and increased the pressure on government officials.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has launched a contempt petition against the government on Saturday after authorities ignored a top court's directive and took detained ex-prime minister Imran Khan to a state hospital, rather than the ordered private facility, as stated by party officials.

The legal move targets several officials, including the prime minister and law minister, according to Naeem Panjutha, PTI's legal advisor. The petition demands that Khan be treated at the private hospital as instructed by the court. Khan, who still enjoys significant popularity, has been jailed since August 2023 following alleged politically motivated charges. His detention has sparked widespread protests.

A bench of three judges had ordered Khan's transfer from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital for medical evaluation. Instead, he was briefly moved to PIMS hospital, sparking allegations of court order breaches. The PTI asserts that Khan should remain under medical care until mid-September. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar cited security concerns as the reason for the change, leading to increased public unrest and organized protests.
