Nauru Rejects ‘One China’ Principle

The Nauru Parliament has rejected Beijing's 'One China' principle through a resolution. The resolution is quite controversial because it was brought about during a visit by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen.

Baron Divavesi Waqa, the Nauruan President read the resolution stating that members of the Parliament rejected the 'one Chine principle' and 'one country, two systems' framework and recognized Taiwan as a sovereign and independent nation. Waqa is the first foreign head of state to publicly express opposition in Parliament to China's 'one country, two systems' framework. He vowed to support and safeguard Taiwan's democratic system of governance. "The parliament opposes China's military intimidation of Taiwan and recognizes the fact that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent nation.

Tsai is in Nauru for an eight-day visit to diplomatic allies in the Pacific, including the Marshall Islands. She was welcomed with a traditional dance by Nauruan students and a police parade.

Waqa said the Nauruan government will do its utmost to support Taiwan's international participation in various international conferences and to work with Taiwan toward sustainable development.

Meanwhile, Taiwan has bestowed on the Nauruan president with the Order of Brilliant Jade with Grand Cordon in recognition of his contribution to promote friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
