Schools closed after record rainfall in Dharamshala

Educational institutions in Kangra were closed today as heavy rains lashed the district, including Dharamshala town which recorded its highest rainfall in 60 years for a day in August, officials said.

The Meteorological department here said 292.4 millimeters rainfall was recorded in Dharamshala in 24 hours ending 8.30 am today.

The earlier record for a 24-hour period for August was 316.4 mm of rainfall which was witnessed on August 6, 1958, Met center director Manmohan Singh said.

The Kangra district administration closed all educational institutions in the district today as a precautionary measure, officials said.

Elsewhere in the state, 127 mm rain was recorded in Jogindernagar in Mandi followed by 98 mm in Pamalmpur and 96 mm in Baijnath (both in Kangra), 81.2 mm in Kheri of Chamba district and 64.8 mm in Nagrota Surian in Kangra district since yesterday.
