Our planet is dyed red: Earth, as you've never seen it before (WATCH)

The map shows a mixture of phosphorescent colors that represent each of the different types of aerosol present in our atmosphere.

Aerosols, solid or liquid particles emitted by oceans, deserts, mountains, and forests, are present throughout our planet. But now NASA, using a model called the Goddard Earth Observation System (GEOS FP), has developed a graph that offers a panoramic view of the sources of these aerosols.

The map shows a mixture of phosphorescent colors that represent each of the different types of aerosol present in our atmosphere.

Blue marks sea salt that rises from ocean storms, while red represents the black carbon emitted by vehicles and factories in addition to large forest fires. The dust particles are highlighted in purple.

The image was compiled by Earth observation satellites Terra, Aqua, Aura and Suomi NPP.

High amounts of aerosol are recorded worldwide. According to the NASA Earth Observatory, high levels are present in South America during the hot months, as forest burning occurs as a way to clear land in the Amazon basin. The same happens in Central America, Central, and South Africa and in Southwest Asia.
