Kuala Lumpur, Jun 6 (360info) — Malaysia's daily waste generation rate far exceeds the global average, raising pressing concerns about its waste disposal strategies for both domestic and imported waste. Despite some progress, Malaysia's household waste surged from 36,500 tonnes per day in 2015 to 38,150 tonnes in 2018, with 16,720 tonnes being food waste. The estimated waste generation rate stands at 1.17 kg per capita per day, significantly higher than the worldwide average of 0.74 kg. Recycling challenges are compounded by 500,000 tonnes of plastic waste imported annually under the guise of recycling.

The 2018 Chinese ban on waste imports redirected global plastic scrap flows to Southeast Asia, making Malaysia a major plastic waste importer. Mismanagement of these waste streams poses severe risks to human health and environmental sustainability. Proper segregation and recycling practices remain lacking, and illegal dumping persists. Investment in Waste-to-Energy technologies and biogas recovery from landfills is seen as a potential solution to these issues.

Strong governance frameworks emphasizing a circular economy and penalizing illegal dumping are essential for addressing these challenges. Enhanced investment in infrastructure and resources, both public and private, is critical for achieving a sustainable waste management future in Malaysia. Financial support from the government through grants, loans, and tax exemptions is necessary to foster infrastructure development and bring about effective waste management practices.
