Brain's Blueprint: How Imagination Guides Decisions

A new study reveals how the brain imagines future outcomes, involving an interplay between the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, to guide decisions. This understanding could aid treatments for decision-making disorders. Using an AI model, predictions were tested on humans and rats navigating mazes, validating the findings.

A groundbreaking study has illuminated the brain's ability to imagine future outcomes, aiding decision-making. This research, which delves into the role of the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, holds promise for improving treatments for decision-making disorders.

According to Marcelo Mattar, an assistant professor at New York University's Department of Psychology, the prefrontal cortex operates as a simulator, using a cognitive map stored in the hippocampus to anticipate actions similar to a chess player strategizing moves.

Published in Nature Neuroscience, the study involved an AI-based model to predict brain activity during planning. This was tested with humans navigating online mazes and compared with neural recordings from rats, revealing comparable results and offering essential insights into our cognitive processes.
