Karnataka on High Alert: Rising Water Levels and Heavy Rainfall Predictions

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre has issued warnings of rising water levels in the Doni river and extreme rainfall across several regions in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Coastal regions have been issued high wave alerts, and intense thunderstorms are expected in multiple districts.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre has sounded alarms, following a Central Water Commission directive, about the dangerous water levels in the Doni river at Talikot HO site in Bijapur (Muddebihal taluk), currently observed at 501.48 m and rising by 7 cm per hour. The historical flood peak is at 502.21 m.

In parallel, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an extreme rainfall warning for the next 72 to 84 hours, particularly targeting the Krishna Catchment areas spanning Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

Bengaluru and coastal Karnataka faced intense but short-lived rains on Sunday. The region, including parts of western ghats and north interior Karnataka, experienced significant rainfall. Officials have issued a high wave alert for coastal Karnataka—watching wave heights ranging from 1.9 m to 2.5 m in Uttara Kanada and Udupi, and 1.7 m to 2.1 m in Dakshina Kannada over the following 48 hours.

Additionally, on June 10, scattered heavy to very heavy rains with isolated extreme rainfall and thunderstorms are forecasted for Uttara Kannada, while districts such as Belagavi, Gadag, Dharwad, Koppal, Bagalkote, Haveri, Vijayapura, and Raichur could encounter thunderstorms with gusty winds blowing at 40-50 kmph.
