Balancing Development with Conservation: India's Environmental Journey

Bhupender Yadav, the newly appointed Union Environment Minister, announced that the Modi government will continue to balance development with environmental conservation. Speaking on Tuesday, Yadav emphasized the importance of sustainable practices as India proposes to host the international climate talks (COP33) in 2028.

Underlining the government's achievements, Yadav highlighted that India has met its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) targets ahead of schedule. 'Our achievements in emission reduction and the renewable energy sector are significant milestones of the Modi government over the past decade,' Yadav told reporters.

He also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the cheetah project and the launch of Mission Life at COP26. 'Both planting trees and protecting them are important,' he said, citing initiatives such as Project Tiger, Project Elephant, and the MISHTI programme for mangrove conservation.

The minister noted India's pivotal reforms in the environmental sector, including the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilience and Infrastructure. India's climate actions were rated fourth strongest globally in 2023 by Germanwatch.

Kirtivardhan Singh joins Yadav as a first-time Union Minister of State for Environment, as the country faces global scrutiny over its environmental policies. Yadav's tenure has also seen bans on single-use plastics and an increase in Ramsar sites, despite some controversies over legislative amendments.
