Deadly Fire Sweeps Through Southeast Turkey, Claims Five Lives

Five people lost their lives, and dozens more needed medical attention when a fire broke out in crop stubble and rapidly spread through settlements in southeast Turkey overnight, officials and news sources reported on Friday.

The fire ignited in an area straddling Diyarbakir and Mardin provinces. Fanned by strong winds, it swiftly engulfed the villages of Koksalan, Yazcicegi, and Bagacik, according to Diyarbakir Governor Ali Ihsan Su. Authorities managed to bring the blaze under control early Friday.

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced on social media that 44 individuals received treatment in hospitals, with ten in serious condition. Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc confirmed that an investigation into the fire, which illuminated the night sky, has been launched.
