Massive Fuel Spill Under Investigation in Arctic’s Barents Sea

Russian regional authorities are currently investigating a significant fuel spill in the Barents Sea located in the Arctic region of Murmansk. According to Interfax news agency, the regional environmental watchdog has reported that oil products have contaminated the Kola Bay and the Tuloma River.

The affected area spans at least 2.7 square kilometers, with contamination levels recorded at 400 times above the permissible threshold.

Local administration announced that the responsible party for the water contamination remains unknown and the investigation is ongoing. This incident harkens back to one of Russia’s worst Arctic fuel spills in 2020, involving 21,000 tonnes of diesel leaking into rivers and subsoil near Norilsk, Siberia.
