Bihar to Tackle Indoor Air Pollution: Study Initiated in Patna

The Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) is initiating an indoor air pollution study in Patna, in collaboration with IIT-Tirupati, to identify pollutants inside homes and suggest corrective measures. The study will later extend to other cities like Gaya and Muzaffarpur. The project emphasizes the serious health risks posed by indoor air pollution, targeting women and children who are most affected.

The Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) is launching a comprehensive study on indoor air pollution in Patna, in collaboration with IIT-Tirupati. The objective is to identify types of indoor pollutants and propose measures to mitigate their effects.

Initially focusing on Patna, the study will be expanded to other cities such as Gaya and Muzaffarpur. According to Devendra Kumar Shukla, Chairman of BSPCB, this initiative marks a significant step as Bihar becomes the first state in India to undertake such a study.

The study will divide the city into zones and use modern techniques to evaluate selected households. With increasing indoor activities like online education and shopping, identifying and controlling indoor pollutants has become crucial. The project aims to address respiratory infections and chronic diseases linked to poor indoor air quality. Shukla highlighted the Indo-Gangetic plains' vulnerability to air pollution and stressed the importance of long-term measures to combat this issue.
