Fifteen people were killed and more than 150 were reported missing after a boat with 300 passengers capsized near Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott, on Monday, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The Mauritanian coastguard rescued 120 individuals, with ten hospitalized, while efforts to locate the missing continue.

Locals have witnessed around 30 bodies being retrieved from the shore amidst strong winds. The Atlantic migration route remains one of the world's most perilous, particularly during the busy summer months. An unprecedented number of migrant deaths have been reported in 2024.
