Man Accused of Sparking Devastating Northern California Fire Arrested

A man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of starting a fire that forced thousands to evacuate their homes overnight in Northern California, according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey. The suspect was identified as the person seen pushing a flaming car into a gully on Wednesday.

The resulting vehicle fire spread, leading to the Park Fire, which grew overnight from about 1,400 acres to roughly 45,500 acres by Thursday morning near Chico, in California's Central Valley, approximately 80 miles north of Sacramento. The 42-year-old suspect was apprehended by Cal Fire arson investigators and police.

His arraignment is scheduled for Monday, but specific charges have not been disclosed. The fire, now only 3 percent contained, has led to the evacuation of over 4,000 people in Butte County and Chico. There were no reported injuries. The fire's rapid expansion was fueled by high winds and lightning strikes, making containment efforts challenging, officials said.
