An elephant calf was discovered dead in marshland in Chhattisgarh's Dhamtari district, officials reported Sunday.

The calf's body was found in a muddy patch near Chandanbahra village in the Sankra range on Saturday. Authorities believe it was part of a herd roaming the Gariaband-Dhamtari inter-district border.

A team, informed of the situation, arrived to extract the carcass. Officials estimate the calf, about 3 months old, died 2-3 days prior. Preliminary post mortem suggests other elephants attempted to rescue it, but likely due to heavy rain, the attempts were unsuccessful. Further autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
