Tragic Flooding in Old Rajendra Nagar: Encroachment and Lapses Blamed

In a tragic incident in Old Rajendra Nagar, three civil services aspirants lost their lives due to heavy rains that flooded a coaching institute’s basement. The storm drains, intended to manage excess water, were reportedly clogged and covered by encroachers, compounding the situation further.

The victims, trapped in the basement library of Rau's IAS Study Circle, faced a dire situation exacerbated by a seemingly malfunctioning biometric entry and exit system. While local residents voiced concerns over the clogged drainage, police are currently investigating the biometric lock's role in the tragedy.

When queried about the drainage maintenance, a senior MCD official pointed to encroachments as a major cause. Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Mishra, responsible for the affected zone, was unavailable for comment. Meanwhile, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has called for strict measures against basement commercial activities and accountability for any lapses by officials.
