Heart-wrenching scenes unfolded at the Meppadi Family Health Centre and Nilambur Government Hospital, where bodies were laid out in coffin refrigerators, and family members performed last rites. Many individuals were seen crying inconsolably as they identified the remains of their loved ones.

The Wayanad district administration released images showing bodies being cremated side-by-side in wood- and gas-based cremation furnaces. At Meppadi Juma Masjid, arrangements were made to bury the bodies as they were identified, with extensive community support for the cause.

The district administration reported that over 180 people are missing, and more than 300 homes were destroyed in the landslides that ravaged Mundakkai and Chooralmala. The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are found beneath the debris caused by torrential rains.
