Delhi's Deluge: Schools Shut and Lives Lost Amidst Heavy Rainfall
Heavy rains in Delhi have caused severe waterlogging, leading to the death of at least two people. Schools were closed as a precaution. The weather office predicted more rain and cautioned about low visibility. Residents have faced extreme weather, including intense rain and flooding, in recent months.
At least two people lost their lives as heavy rain inundated India's capital, Delhi, causing widespread waterlogging and leading to the closure of schools on Thursday. Authorities have predicted more rain in the coming days.
Wednesday's unexpected deluge saw 147 mm (5.8 inches) of rainfall recorded in eastern Delhi and its suburbs, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather office has warned citizens to remain cautious due to poor visibility and flooding in low-lying areas.
Delhi Water Minister Atishi, who is known mononymously, confirmed in a post on X that the two fatalities occurred after individuals fell into a waterlogged drain. She also ordered the closure of schools for the day amid ongoing rainfall concerns.
IMD forecasts moderate thundershowers will continue throughout the day and predicts rain for the next five days. Emergency visuals from ANI news agency showed rescue teams working through debris after a house collapse, though no injuries were reported. The city has recently faced a spate of extreme weather events, including severe heat waves and a series of floods.
