The landslides, triggered by heavy rainfall in Wayanad district, buried or swept away people in their sleep, claiming 205 lives and leaving nearly 200 more missing. The disaster is the worst in Kerala since 2018 floods.

The newly constructed bridge allowed heavy vehicles to reach Mundakkai, the worst affected area. The rescue efforts, supported by drones with earth-sensing technology, focused on the Chaliyar river and its banks where many bodies were found.
