A 43-year-old woman was killed and several others were injured after two old houses collapsed near the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi early on Tuesday, officials reported.

Divisional Commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the local MP, was immediately informed of the situation.

"Two homes collapsed. One, owned by Mr. Gupta, housed nine people. The other, owned by Mr. Yadav, saw its residents escape easily while seven from the first property had to be rescued from the debris," Sharma explained.

Among those rescued, one woman, Premlata Gupta, was declared dead at the hospital, while others are undergoing treatment. A woman police constable also sustained injuries.

The rescue efforts, now complete, have shifted to clearing debris and restoring utilities. "The prime minister was briefed on the incident, rescue operations, and the condition of the injured," the official added, noting instructions to provide free, high-quality medical care. Modi expressed his condolences to the grieving family.
