Tropical Storm Debby has unleashed relentless rain across the U.S. Southeast, now drifting off the Carolinas and presenting a severe flooding threat before accelerating towards the Northeast in the coming days.
At least six fatalities have been reported in Florida and Georgia as the storm, initially hitting Florida's Gulf Coast as a Category 1 storm, continues to wreak havoc. Coastal governors have declared states of emergency as neighborhoods find themselves submerged due to widespread flooding.
Neil Dixon from the National Weather Service in Charleston, South Carolina, highlighted the extreme nature of the rainfall, breaking longstanding records. Rainfall could reach up to 25 inches in South Carolina. The storm carries winds up to 45 mph, and coastal residents are bracing for storm surges and ongoing flooding, with additional rainfall predicted through the week.
