The disaster struck late at night, burying dozens of homes while families slept. Since Wednesday, authorities have recovered nine more bodies, adding to the initial toll of 26 fatalities. Rescuers face challenges identifying some victims due to the condition of the bodies.

The landslide was triggered by recent torrential rains that have plagued parts of Uganda, causing widespread flooding and destruction. This tragedy has amplified concerns from local residents about the hazardous conditions at the landfill, which has served Kampala for decades. Similar disasters have occurred elsewhere in Africa, such as the 2017 incident in Ethiopia that killed at least 115 people.
