The M-Sand Innovation Challenge 2024, a groundbreaking initiative by Habitat for Humanity’s Terwilliger Center for Innovation, in collaboration with Startup TN and Kerala Startup Mission, seeks to revolutionize the landscape of affordable housing in India. Officially announced at a sector event, the challenge focuses on boosting the supply and distribution of manufactured sand, or M-sand, which has emerged as an eco-friendly alternative to river sand.

The challenge addresses the pressing demand for sand amid India's construction boom, which has fueled an illegal river sand mining industry causing environmental damage. M-Sand, made from crushed granite, holds promise as an alternative that could mitigate these issues while helping bridge a significant housing gap in urban areas.

The event recognized three businesses for their innovative contributions: Satiq Concrete Manufacturer Pvt Ltd, Vision, and Go Green Elements. These winners now have the opportunity to showcase their solutions and explore next steps, signaling a pivotal moment for sustainable construction practices in low-income markets.
