The European Commission announced a proposal to slash emissions by 90% from 1990 levels by 2040. This target is part of the EU's drive to achieve zero net emissions by 2050. The 2040 goal will also inform a 2035 target, contributing to the Paris Agreement obligations.

The European Commission has unveiled its ambitious plan to cut Europe's greenhouse gas emissions by 90% from 1990 levels by 2040, as part of its long-term strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
This announcement was confirmed in a Commission work programme, marking a critical step in the EU's climate policy. The 2040 target will be a pivotal factor, helping EU countries stay on course to meet their legally binding net-zero emissions goal by 2050.
In addition, the 2040 target will serve as a foundation for establishing a 2035 goal, fulfilling the commitments required under the Paris Agreement. It demands all countries to report their national contributions to combat climate change this year.
