Himachal Pradesh's Green Solution to Combat Landslides

The Himachal Pradesh government has initiated a bio-engineering project using vetiver grass to prevent landslides. With a deep root system, this grass helps in soil stabilization and erosion prevention. Partnered with the Vetiver Foundation, the project aims to enhance disaster resilience by cultivating vetiver before the 2025 monsoon season.

The Himachal Pradesh government has embarked on a groundbreaking bio-engineering project to tackle the rising incidences of landslides within the state. As detailed by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday, the initiative includes the use of vetiver grass, celebrated globally for its robust soil-stabilizing properties.

A pilot project is underway to plant vetiver grass, known for its ability to anchor soil through its extensive root network. This natural solution not only stabilizes slopes prone to landslides but also offers a cost-effective, sustainable approach to maintain soil integrity. The grass forms a 'living wall' that controls water runoff and minimizes soil erosion.

The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, in collaboration with Tamil Nadu's Vetiver Foundation, is overseeing the project's development. The initial batch of 1,000 saplings has shown promise with high survival rates. This effort is part of a larger strategy to fortify the state against the twin threats of heavy monsoons and seismic activity.
