The Delhi High Court on Tuesday underscored Chandni Chowk's status as a key historical and commercial hub in the city, calling for intense collaboration among authorities to preserve its character and heritage. Despite redevelopment, the area suffers from poor maintenance, prompting the court to demand prompt action.
Chief Justice D K Upadhayaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela pointed out the negligence of responsible agencies, urging the involvement of the highest-level officers rather than relying solely on subordinate ones. The bench proposed forming a committee of top-ranking officials to strategize a comprehensive roadmap for the area's upkeep.
Issues highlighted in a PIL include infrastructure damage, hygiene problems, and unchecked encroachments. The court insisted that shopkeepers and local communities must partake in preservation efforts. Meanwhile, tourism remains robust, drawing global visitors to Chandni Chowk. The case will resume in April, exploring further measures.
