Record Olive Ridley Turtles Nesting at Rushikulya: Conservation Triumph

The Rushikulya river mouth in Odisha's Ganjam district reported a record-breaking mass nesting of 6.82 lakh olive ridley turtles, surpassing past figures. Favorable climatic conditions have been attributed to the increased nesting. Conservation efforts include protective fencing, ensuring the safety of the eggs from predators.

Over 6.82 lakh olive ridley turtles have made their way to the Rushikulya river mouth in Odisha's Ganjam district, marking a record-breaking event in their mass nesting history. This remarkable turnout surpasses previous records and highlights the area's growing significance for these endangered marine species.

The mass nesting commenced on February 16, further corroborating the favorable climatic conditions credited for this significant increase. 'The improved climate this year has facilitated the turtles' nesting,' noted Bivas Pandav, a senior scientist from the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun.

To ensure the survival of the laid eggs, authorities have taken substantial conservation actions, including installing protective fencing along a new 9-kilometer stretch from New Podampeta to Prayagi. This measure aims to shield the eggs from potential predators during the hatching period, which scientists anticipate will yield a substantial number of hatchlings.
