In a groundbreaking step towards advancing Ayurvedic research in diabetes management, the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Kolkata, under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the School of Natural Product Studies (SNPS), Jadavpur University, Kolkata. This significant collaboration, formalized at CARI, Kolkata, marks the commencement of a pioneering research project titled "Evaluation of Vidangadi Lauham, a Classical Ayurvedic Formulation in the Management of Diabetes in Experimental Animals."
The project aims to establish a robust scientific foundation for the use of Vidangadi Lauham, a time-honored Ayurvedic formulation, in managing diabetes. Through in-depth biophysical characterization and the analysis of biological activity in medicinal plants, this study will contribute substantially to the preservation and advancement of India’s rich medicinal plant heritage. By integrating traditional Ayurvedic wisdom with modern scientific validation, the research seeks to ensure the formulation’s efficacy and safety for broader acceptance in diabetes care.
A key aspect of this initiative is the creation of a comprehensive database that validates the health benefits of medicinal plants, thereby reinforcing their credibility within the global healthcare landscape. This will play a crucial role in positioning Ayurvedic formulations as reliable, natural health-promoting agents. With diabetes becoming an increasingly prevalent global health challenge, the development of Ayurvedic solutions with minimal or no side effects holds promise for significantly improving public health outcomes.
The MoU signing event witnessed the presence of esteemed officials from both institutions. Representing CARI, Kolkata, were Dr. G. Babu, Director; Dr. Anupam Mangal, Assistant Director (Pharmacognosy); Dr. Lalrin Puia, Research Officer (Pharmacology); Dr. Sharad D. Pawar, Assistant Director (Pharmacology); and Dr. Rahul Singh, Research Officer (AEP). From SNPS, Jadavpur University, Prof. (Dr.) Pallab Kanti Halder, Director and Principal Investigator of the project, was also in attendance.
This collaborative research endeavor is expected to pave the way for the development of high-quality, scientifically validated Ayurvedic formulations for diabetes management. By bridging traditional medicine with contemporary research methodologies, the initiative underscores India's leadership in holistic healthcare while addressing one of the most pressing health concerns of modern times. The study’s findings could revolutionize diabetes care by offering natural, safe, and effective solutions, thus enhancing the quality of life for millions worldwide.
