On Tuesday, Bhakra Dam authorities reopened its floodgates after a two-year hiatus, releasing 45,000 cusecs of water due to the rapidly rising reservoir levels. The release is being conducted in a controlled manner as a precautionary measure, according to officials.

The region has experienced significant rainfall in recent days, with forecast models predicting more heavy showers. At 3 PM, 38,000 cusecs were released through turbines and an additional 7,000 cusecs via the spillway.

This move aims to ensure safety and prevent sudden flooding downstream in the face of incoming heavy rains, projected for later this week in Himachal Pradesh and surrounding catchment areas. Authorities have committed to prior communication with partner states if more water releases become necessary.
