The Brazilian presidency of COP30 has urged nations to increase their climate pledges, citing inadequacies in current commitments. Ahead of the UN climate summit in Belem this November, fresh consultations on key issues like fossil fuels, finance, and deforestation are underway, as global warming surpasses safe limits.
According to COP30 president-designate Andre Correa do Lago, an alarming 80% of countries have not submitted updated climate targets, or NDCs, for 2035. The existing targets predict a 2.7-degree Celsius rise, exceeding the Paris Agreement's 1.5-degree ceiling. This underscores the importance of new NDCs for successfully addressing climate change at the summit.
In preparation, Brazil announced 'COP30 Presidency Consultations' starting September 25, involving online and in-person sessions. These talks will tackle issues like NDCs, fossil fuel reductions, and deforestation. Correa do Lago also highlighted frustrations over climate finance, urging support for ambitious global actions. COP30, marking a decade since the Paris Agreement, will test multilateral climate diplomacy.
