A powerful snowstorm in Chile's Torres del Paine National Park resulted in the tragic deaths of five tourists, officials reported on Tuesday. The disaster struck the southern region of Patagonia, leaving two Germans, two Mexicans, and one British national dead.
Efforts are underway to repatriate the victims' bodies, as confirmed by Jose Antonio Ruiz, presidential delegate for Magallanes. The task is complicated by extreme weather conditions hampering recovery operations, with wind speeds exceeding 120 mph.
President Gabriel Boric expressed his condolences to the victims' families, assuring them of Chilean authorities' full support. Tourists were lost near Los Perros camp, demanding a challenging trek through fierce weather conditions.
