A rare observation of the striated grassbird has been documented in the Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary, Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra, marking a significant milestone in avian records for the region.
This finding, disclosed by the Forest Department, is noteworthy due to the bird's rare presence in eastern Maharashtra, previously noted only in Jalgaon district's Tapi River basin. The latest sighting signifies a notable range expansion within the state.
The citizen science bird survey, completed on November 29-30, found two striated grassbirds, reinforcing the sanctuary's importance for habitat conservation. The survey recorded over 140 species, including threatened riverine birds, highlighting the area's rich avifaunal diversity and advancing scientific research and environmental protection initiatives.
