The Maharashtra cabinet has taken a significant step by approving a scheme for constructing all-weather motorable roads linking agricultural fields across the state's rural areas. The decision, aimed at boosting rural connectivity, was finalized in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The 'Mukhya Mantri Baliraja Shet-Panand Raste Yojana' introduces 100% mechanized construction as a replacement for the labour-intensive methods dictated by the MGNREGA framework. This move addresses delays and inefficiencies impacting farmers' access to vital transport routes.
Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule highlighted that the scheme would significantly mitigate issues arising from damaged or inaccessible roads during monsoons, ensuring smoother agricultural operations. The program also includes waivers on various fees and mandates tree plantation along roadsides while promoting cluster-based tendering to expedite the construction process.
