Climate Milestone Alert: Nearing Record Heat Despite Global Goals
The year 2023 may become one of the warmest on record, per C3S, following COP30's failure to enhance climate action. Global temperatures continue to rise, pushing past 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels. Extreme weather events indicate the accelerating pace of climate change, primarily due to CO2 emissions.
This year's global temperatures might become the second or third highest ever recorded, possibly outdone only by 2024, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported.
The announcement comes in the wake of the COP30 climate summit, which failed to reach new agreements on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, amid international tensions and policy backtracking. The year is expected to close a three-year span with average global temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above the pre-industrial baseline, C3S stated.
'These records aren't abstract; they represent the quickening pace of climate change,' emphasized Samantha Burgess of C3S. Severe weather has been widespread, with Typhoon Kalmaegi claiming over 200 lives in the Philippines, and Spain facing devastating wildfires fueled by climate conditions.
