Uttarakhand has established a unique cell to tackle the escalating issues arising from human-wildlife conflicts, as reported to the Lok Sabha. This move follows a significant increase in wildlife encounters, particularly with leopards and bears, which have caused fear among residents.

Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Kirti Vardhan Singh, addressed queries from BJP MP Anil Baluni, stating that the state has completed a leopard population assessment with the help of the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. The minister emphasized that wildlife management, including conflict resolution, is primarily the responsibility of the state.

The increase in human-wildlife encounters, particularly in Garhwal, has led to injuries and fatalities. Baluni urged for advanced equipment and expert teams to address the situation, while school children reportedly stay home to avoid potential attacks. The minister reiterated that local authorities are the first responders in these situations.
