Taiwan Strengthens Defense Amidst Rising Tensions Over Pratas Islands

Taiwan is enhancing its defenses of the Pratas Islands as China increases its activities in the region. The Pratas, located between Taiwan and Hong Kong, are claimed by China. Taiwan's coastguard is tasked with the islands' defense, while China steps up 'grey zone' activities, presenting strategic challenges.

Taiwan has announced plans to bolster its defenses around the Pratas Islands, amid escalating tensions with China. The islands, strategically located between Taiwan and Hong Kong in the South China Sea, are perceived as vulnerable targets due to their distance from mainland Taiwan.

While Taiwan's coastguard, rather than the military, currently oversees the islands, China has intensified its 'grey zone' operations in the area. These non-combat operations are viewed as attempts to pressure Taiwan. Kuan Bi-ling, head of Taiwan's Ocean Affairs Council, highlighted an increase in Chinese government boats around the Pratas.

Efforts are underway to develop an island defense system on the Pratas. Amid recent provocations, such as a Chinese drone flyover, Taiwan is accelerating its military preparedness, deploying advanced vessels and planning for wartime readiness, according to Kuan's statements to the Taiwan Foreign Correspondents' Club.
