Maharashtra is grappling with severe heatwave conditions, with Akola in the Vidarbha region reaching a national high of 44.2 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The department highlighted that Vidarbha cities dominated the country's highest temperatures, a worrying trend for the region.
Officials have cautioned that heatwave conditions are expected to persist across most districts of Vidarbha, with temperatures continuing to soar over the next few days. An anti-cyclonic circulation over Maharashtra is contributing to this extreme weather, keeping temperatures elevated.
In response to the intense heat, schools in Wardha have been ordered to close. Cooperative measures are advised, with residents encouraged to remain indoors, particularly during peak afternoon hours, to avoid heat-related illnesses.
