The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has warned of severe ecological degradation of Hokersar Lake, with over 2,500 kanals encroached. The wetland, an ecologically significant area, faces threats from pollution, encroachment, and inadequate management, with calls for urgent conservation efforts to preserve its pristine state.
Highlighting changes from 2014-2020, the CAG reports a notable reduction in open water as land use shifts, leading to increased scrub areas and aquatic vegetation. The lack of comprehensive conservation plans exacerbates the situation, with the absence of scientific dredging, pollution control, and demarcation efforts being major concerns.
The audit emphasizes the need for an ecological balance in Hokersar Lake, recommending interventions like pollution identification, scientific dredging, and surveys to mitigate further encroachment. Efforts to manage flood control and improve water quality remain unfulfilled, affecting both the environment and local livelihoods.
