Empowering Communities: A New Dawn for Biodiversity Governance

The Environment Ministry and National Biodiversity Authority have initiated a five-year project focusing on strengthening biodiversity governance in Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya by engaging local communities. The project aims to integrate biodiversity with Gram Panchayat Development Plans and innovative financing for sustainable development and conservation.

The Environment Ministry, alongside the National Biodiversity Authority, has unveiled a strategic five-year initiative aimed at bolstering grassroots biodiversity governance in Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya. This ambitious project seeks to empower local communities by integrating biodiversity into Gram Panchayat Development Plans, officials announced on Sunday.

Key objectives of the initiative include mainstreaming biodiversity in local development agendas to reinforce the role of Panchayati Raj Institutions and Biodiversity Management Committees. By creating landscape-level multi-stakeholder platforms, the project envisages uniting forest departments, revenue authorities, elected representatives, and civil society to produce community-owned and funded biodiversity plans.

In addition, innovative financing mechanisms are being promoted. These include access and benefit-sharing agreements, CSR co-financing, and the establishment of green micro-enterprises to offer sustainable livelihoods. With a $4.88 million grant for 2025-2030 from the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Development Programme, the project will begin in Tamil Nadu's Sathyamangalam landscape and Meghalaya's Garo Hills.
