New Research Testbed Boosts Weather Prediction in Visakhapatnam

The Coastal Atmospheric Research Testbed at Andhra University was inaugurated to enhance weather predictions. It aims to improve understanding and forecasting of monsoon convection and extreme weather events. Advanced instruments will aid in research and data assimilation experiments, supporting better early warning systems for cyclones and disaster management.

The Coastal Atmospheric Research Testbed (C-ART) at Andhra University in Visakhapatnam was inaugurated on Friday by Union Earth Sciences Secretary M Ravichandran. This observatory aims to enhance the precision of weather predictions, focusing particularly on monsoon convection and extreme events.

The facility incorporates diverse instruments like wind lidars and doppler radars to advance research capabilities. It has already recorded data from a recent thunderstorm, showcasing its potential to improve forecasting models.

Secretary Ravichandran emphasized the Ministry's commitment to bolstering observational capacities under Mission Mausam. These efforts intend to better predict severe weather, enhancing early warning systems essential for disaster management.
