IIT Bombay's Pioneering Carbon Capture Facility: A Leap Toward Sustainability

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has launched a pilot facility for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage, integrating carbon capture technology with geological sequestration. Inaugurated by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, this facility showcases a self-reliant carbon mitigation approach, addressing value addition in carbon capture by generating useful by-products.

In a significant move towards addressing climate change, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay inaugurated an innovative pilot facility targeting Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS). The project, which falls under the Bharat Innovates 2026 initiative, was kicked off by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The facility stands out for integrating indigenous carbon capture technology with geological CO2 sequestration, particularly within the Deccan basalt formations. This new approach by IIT Bombay presents a closed-loop, cost-effective method for carbon mitigation, tackling emissions from both ambient air and industrial sources.

During the event, Minister Pradhan lauded IIT Bombay's efforts, highlighting the integration of CO2 by-products into industries like steel, paints, and cement. This development addresses previous challenges related to carbon capture value addition and will be presented at Bharat Innovates 2026 in France next month.
